It is with sorrow—and yet gratitude for a life extraordinarily lived—that the family of David J.A. Clines announce his death.

David J.A. Clines (born 1938) died on Thursday 08 December 2023, peacefully, at home.

David was emeritus professor in Biblical Studies at the University of Sheffield where he was first appointed in 1964. A short academic obituary has been published.

Funeral 6th January 2023

A simple funeral took place at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium, Sheffield, on Friday 06 January  2023 at 1.30 pm.

This will be followed by refreshments at Side 8 Social, The Octagon, University of Sheffield.

Memorial Service 29th April 2023

A memorial service to celebrate David J.A. Clines’s life and work will take place at St Mark’s, Broomhill in Sheffield on Saturday 29 April at 2 pm. (with refreshments afterwards).

Memorial Symposium 28th-29th April 2023

Prior to the memorial service there will be a David J.A. Clines memorial symposium at the University of Sheffield from the afternoon of Friday 28 April until the morning of Saturday 29 April, including invited papers from J. Cheryl Exum, Christl M Maier, H. G. M Williamson and James K. Aitken. Please make an expression of interest for attending / contributing to the symposium on this form.
